PCOS Service – GP Information

What is The Jean Hailes PCOS Service?

PCOS affects 12 to 18 per cent of reproductive aged women. It impacts psychological and physical function in multiple ways with significant long term complications. For women who require specialist multidisciplinary assistance in the management of PCOS, the Jean Hailes PCOS Service is a new service providing coordinated multidisciplinary assessment and management of PCOS. The PCOS Service is held at the Jean Hailes Medical Centre for Women, 173 Carinish Road, Clayton (Contact and location).

Important Facts for GPs

  • GPs will retain care coordination
  • A comprehensive management plan will be developed designed to assist ongoing management in primary care.
  • The program includes a lifestyle management program targeting healthy lifestyle for women with PCOS.

Eligibility

Females > 14 years of age presenting with any TWO of the following features:

  • Oligo/anovulation
  • Clinical and/or biochemical signs of hyperandrogenism
  • Polycystic ovaries on ultrasound


GPs may elect to refer to a Jean Hailes Clinician to assist in diagnosing PCOS.  Enquiries regarding referral eligibility can be directed to the clinic on 03 9562 7555.

Investigations Required Prior to Referral

1. Recent Gynaecological Ultrasound
(if not performed in the last 2 years)

Transvaginal or transabdominal (if not yet sexually active). Ideally by a woman’s imaging centre or Gynaecologist.

2. Sex Hormone-Binding Globulin (SHBG)

 

3. Testosterone

Option 1:
Total Testosterone (can be Sensitive Testosterone via Dorevitch) and Free Androgen Index (FAI)

Option 2:
Calculated Free Testosterone levels

4. Prolactin

 

5. Thyroid Stimulating Hormone (TSH)

 

NOTES:

  • Ultrasound is not required if diagnosis of PCOS has been made on alternate two diagnostic criteria as outlined above. 
  • Androgens are of limited usefulness in those currently/recently on OCP. 
  • Additional tests may be arranged by the PCOS Service.

What is the cost to the patient?

A $50.00 non refundable booking fee is required when making the initial appointment (credit card via phone).

Initial Appointment $314.50
Includes: 45 minute education session, resource kit, 45 minute specialist review.
Medicare rebate: $220.15

Review Appointment $212.00
Includes: 20 minute specialist review, 1 hour group dietitian session
Medicare rebate: $110.25

Also included is a subsequent 2 hour lifestyle management program providing educational resources and health coaching tools. This program includes remote support for the lifestyle program for one year. 

Total cost for five multidisciplinary sessions held over three visits after Medicare rebate is: $246.10

Do you offer concession?

Unfortunately we are unable to offer bulk billing or health care card concessions. Patients ineligible for Medicare will be charged full fees for all services provided.
